My advice: Dont search too much for clues in the text. The algorithm is a very specific one, not something that can reveal itself from observation or random calculations, If you know it, the clue hits you, if it doesnt ring a bell, then consider there isnt any clue and keep googling.
Also, the initial grid is itself NEITHER a puzzle nor any kind of QR code. It's just an initial starting point. You only get out of life what you put into it, I guess.

(dont tell me about "life" because it wont make a bit of difference)
Invert colors - done
Remove 3 columns and rows from each aide to get a 21x21 grid...done
I know its a pixel puzzle...do I convert the picture into the puzzle clues? That being the 4th row is 1,1,1,1,1,1,2 (when I remove the first and last three cells)...
I'm interested in help (telegram same name)
edit: puzzle done... 1 is correct...2 and 3 is not correct. This puzzle is single entry like last week...and is very specific to programmers. Hint: this type of programming is used to make gifs.
I feel stupid for not getting the reference to "life" earlier.
I solved the puzzle and got confirmation, that it is correct, but I can't scan scan it for some reason. Trying to work that out now, but If anyone knows a way to get the scanner to work, that would be appreciated.
Theres the 'pro way' and the 'con way' to solve this 'game'.The pro way is with automating with excel or some other coded program. The con way, well, would be having luck googling with key words.
Nice play on words. However, by this logic, it seems that decoders would need to choose one or the other. But both ways are not mutually exclusive. I used both.
Everybody would need to start with the latter anyway if they haven't been privileged with being previously exposed to the concept!
As for this challenge, I got the first two steps before coming to the forum (used Excel, because I'm proficient in that, and did it only with formulae), but am still stuck on the last part.
I'm curious to know what kind of window would be censored out by the forum software...
I showed this challenge to my son yesterday and he solved it in about 10 minutes. He used a Windows app called OnTopReplica to do basically the same thing you did.
The window belonged to the GNU Image Manipulation Program. don't know why the 4 letter abbreviation of the full title would be censored. perhaps niantic hates free open source software (aka FOSS)?
I'd never heard of it before this challenge, yet I managed to find the GOL before we started mentioning the creator. Google is a wondrous thing when utilised properly.
Conway was such a brilliant mathematician and a gentle soul, that I presume he was among those big, ancient names in math textbook. Never realized he was still alive, till several days ago.

Don't try to rearrange the grid. There is a specific method/process/formula that needs to be applied. Don't look for a pattern, there is none.
The clue is "Life". Try searching on Google what that might have to do with the grid. @FlameOfHeaven

till now we have:
Dreamer: 8 yellow hexagons
Interpreter: 7 blue letters
Visionary: 3 bold/white words
Skeptic: 4/5 pink squares
Listener: 2 red dots/notes
Humanist: I dont know :/
@TyphoonJim @RDFA maybe 1 italics word? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think we should ask John C. for a hint.
So if I use the hints from the thread

Very cool! Its not 100% the same, but it reminds me of a certain handheld game from the 90s.

the question was asked on how to automate this.
well my approach came very close.
I scaled the picture with the grid so that is matches the grid in the program with which I was going to apply the 'algorithm'.
then I put the GNU Image Manipulation Program window behind the other window and adjusted the transparency so the original grid was shining through.
then I just colored the gray spots white and I was done in a minute or even less.
this is a picture of the grid half finished.
Coincidental article I found on Neatorama

If you are stuck at the last part, you probably didn't do the first part correctly. The last part is just scanning.
Got it as well, took some time to find the time.
The hint doesn't help if you haven't heard of it before, luckely some people spilled the beans.
Now it's time to get back to Listener.

Ah yes, now you mention it, we've had problems with mentioning the name of that software before.
Good fix @NianticThomas. Can you fix Visionary too please?

Got it. I had the right idea, but apparently my notion of neighbor was not as inclusive as it should have been.
It looks like it should become a QR code, now that I look back on it- but it won't reveal its true form until you do something.
No programming knowledge required. It's just that this task is often solved as an exercise in programming.
John H. Conway has passed away from COVID-19. R.I.P.
