Interesting. I feel like my mesh scans go through fairly easily. I'm just not scanning the portal itself, as it turns out I've got to be much closer to portals than I've been until now. Honestly not a great distance most of the time, can't say that scanning part of a wall of the local churches feels stupid...
At least I've got a better idea of what is actually scanned, and I'll try to change the way I do the scans of larger portals, see how it goes.
FWIW, after the hexagons appeared, I found that I get a lot more hexagons on the portal itself if, while I slowly walk towards or around the portal, I scan the ground first and slowly "paint" upwards and downwards towards the portal, getting higher on the portal each time. Starting a scan directly at a portal results in fewer hexagons if it isn't very close.
I've never watched anyone else scan and Niantic certainly hasn't offered any clarity on it either (maybe a little), so I think I've just stuck to the suggestions in-game and what I've seen here. "Walk slowly around the object." And I'm thinking of it from a 3D perspective, so walking towards something didn't seem like it would capture as much data as walking around it. But I'll definitely give some of that advice a try later today and see if it helps.
It would definitely be helpful if Niantic worked with us on this. The better scans we provide, the better product they can deliver.
I’m curious if any android devices are supported. The S20 “might” be, but not sure if it has the right LiDAR installed or not. Looks like pixel 6 doesn’t have LiDAR either.
Does anyone from Niantic check these forums? Seriously… Drop an update and than y’all ghost us….
The Lidar scanners in the phones are not used. At all. iPhone 13 Pro is not supported. (haha, ****.)
Samsung S10 is compatible, Pixel 5 isn't. S21 plus not compatible, oneplus 9 pro is supported. (There's a discussion on the Ingress Updates [ENG] channel where people are reporting if their phone is supported or not.)
Nobody has really said anything and people are asking questions, so I'm trying to help people figure out why their phones may or may not be working. Someone mentioned LiDAR earlier in this thread or elsewhere and I was assuming that might be a requirement for mesh scanning, thank you for clarifying.
If you have a list of phones that are capable, please feel free to share it with the people who are curious why their phones aren't working. Easy to come in here pointing out why my comments are wrong when I'm literally trying to help people when it's obvious no one from Niantic has the time or interest to do it. @NianticBrian@NianticThia
Yeah, I don’t get why they are so reluctant to respond on their own forums…
In any case, I’ve mentioned before that my phone has a LiDAR Scanner which is perfect for this whole scanning idea. It would make scanning possible and more accurate in low light situations.
But it isn’t being used. Neither are any of the additional cameras on my device, I have three, but I only get a cropped view of the main camera. Weird choices. (Also what’s up with the distance? It’s only like 5 meters)
@NianticBrian while now having the 2.83.1 release of Ingress i thought you stated & showed that you have updated the loading flow screens to show off the lightship upgrades with a fancy logo and loading screen as per your 2.83.1 post...i now just have a black screen where i guess it is supposed to be...so my current flow is niantic logo screen -> black screen 10 seconds -> niantic ingress prime screen with disclaimer + build id -> location globe -> black map screen with stuck disclaimer ???
Wheres my posh niantic lightship screen...its the small details i get the most excited about. (Im joking y'all)
Can anyone from Niantic explain mesh scanning to me? I feel like I'm supposed to be seeing scans from other agents and I see nothing. I would think my own previous scans would show, yet, nothing.
Like, as always, I really want to be into this, but y'all make it so difficult because you just can't seem to share anything but the absolute bare minimum. How is this supposed to work?
Meshing isn't supported on my phone, but if I had to guess…
During the course of making a single "scan," you'll see a mesh over sections of the scene that have been mapped out (or "scanned"), and no mesh everywhere else. There's nothing to do with your previous scans or scans that others have made.
Your response confuses me. If the mesh has nothing to do with previous scans, how will I see a mesh of previous scans while I'm scanning?
The comment in the releases notes leads me to believe I should be seeing some sort of view of previous scans, mine or other agents. Yet, I've seen nothing. The 200 or so mesh scans I've done look exactly the same as the scans I was doing weeks ago (no mesh). I'm guessing there might be some sort of update that has to be pushed, but I'm just guessing. Brians release notes would lead one to believe these updated views would already be live....
Perhaps I should have said "…mapped out during the current scan…." But, yeah, my comment will be confusing because I think we have completely different expectations.
I'm assuming Niantic has implemented the bare minimum they possibly could (showing you just the progress of the current scan). I think that "meshing" is just a different visualization method. It serves the same purpose as the "point cloud" in previous versions of the scanner. That's what I get from the totality of the bullet point.
You're assuming Niantic has implemented something more impressive (showing you how our collective scans are progressing).
I'm basing my assumption or expectations on the wording used by @NianticBrian in his release notes.
Portal Scan Meshing on supported phones allows Agents to better see what has and hasn’t been scanned during a Portal Scan.
I think we're getting the bare minimum, as you're suggesting, because nothing I've encountered matches what the releases notes suggest. If it said will allow or will soon allow, my expectations would be different. I have uploaded all of those scans and returned to the same portals, no existing scans have shown.
I'm really just hoping for some clarification from anyone at Niantic, as I'm fine with either option. I have over 4000 scans submitted to Niantic, so I do enjoy scanning and am excited about the potential use-cases for Ingress. Just a little back and forth would go a long way, especially in cases like this.
Thanks, creating the scans isn't an issue, I've uploaded probably 300 since meshing was released. Just looking for some clarification on his comments regarding being able to seeing previous scans.
I think you are misunderstanding what was actually said in the first place. I made the same misunderstanding.
"...see what has and hasn’t been scanned during a Portal Scan" I think "during" is the key word here. You and I thought this meant we could see what had or hadn't been scanned previously, but in fact it just is supposed to give you a better idea of what you have scanned during the current scan process.

Any countermeasures for DeFit?

I am very excited for the adventure sync for Ingress. It's been a long time coming.
@NianticBrian Mesh scan dont work on my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Exynos. What i need to get it work or Samsung must update the support for it?
Just got the update on my new Pixel 6, and "Meshing is not supported on this device"?

Lidar is not needed for this scanning. Where did you get that idea that you need lidar for this?! Nobody said anything about lidars.🤦♂️
I have Galaxy S20FE and LG V30 and mesh scanning works on both phones. And obviously neither of them have lidar.🙄
Hope Niantic add the support soon for Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Exynos.
It's probably not up to Niantic but AR Core compatibility https://developers.google.com/ar/devices

Please ensure that Ingress Support pages are updated with these new features. E.g. Adventure Sync is not described at all as of this writing.
They do not need scans in "low light" situations. It's useless for photogrammetry process.
For the what now? We are scanning to create a 3d model, which is exactly why the LiDAR Scanner exists.
and still nothing from our niantic overlords....
Gotta give it to them, they really stick to their ways.
Funciona de maravilla otro motivo más para entrenar
Look up what photogrammetry is.🙄

What does this mean exactly?!? Is this working yet? Anyone out there.....
