Why no Niantic forums?
Instead of each game having their own dedicated forums, why not just have a general Niantic forum with each game having its own sub-category?
This feels like a missed opportunity to combine all the communities and allow more cross-promotion (for free).

I will note here that, a number of other games have also closed their forums, or just used Discord from the beginning.
@NianticBrian why not use Discord?
Especially since it was noted ladt week at GDC 2024 that Niantic and Discord have partnered together.
But also like the OP, why not have o e set of Niantic forums for all products and games?
niantic (lower case to show disrespect) is no longer interested in managing or dealing with the Ingress community. This is why they are farming it out to a player-run subreddit.
I'd also be happy with a Discord. Just not Reddit please.
I'm laughing at the jobs available...marketing manager for every game except Ingress.
Costs money, and they want less reason to talk to users i guess
Any new system implies Niantic would be involved. If they're not involved, the IUENG channel and others like it do a good job of keeping the community communicating amongst itself.
Why create a new space where Niantic isn't present?
For once, I agree with the Ingress Founders Union. 😆
I agree with this. Other Niantic games still have a forum, so categories for each game would be a relatively small burden, and it'd go a long way towards making the Ingress community actually feel valued.
Reddit is a terrible choice in my opinion. They alienated a big chunk of their own user base last year, and there's still a lot of people who refuse to use them to this day.
Reddit also has some pretty broad IP-based blocks in place. For example, I can't access Reddit from work... I get a "Whoa there, pardner!" message from them whenever I try. That's quite frustrating because there's often info that could be useful for my job.
(Yes, I'm 100% certain it's on the Reddit side. I also understand why they made this particular choice but that doesn't make it less frustrating.)
I can just imagine the chaos of a Pokémon GO forum.
Originally, Campfire would have been the way to go.
However, Campfire is not accessible from a web browser, and the structure of the site makes it difficult to add mentions, replies, etc., so it has not been able to serve as anything more than a gateway to Ingress. (Updates are too slow, after all.)
In fact, when Google+ was shut down, MeWe was expected to take its place, but it never grew in usage, in part for the reasons mentioned above.
Also, Reddit has mostly English-speaking users and its functionality is not that good.
It's probably one of the first things that comes to mind for Americans for the above reasons, but posting will probably decrease even more than it is now because it's not a good option for users from the rest of the world.
How not to keep a community engaged. A future study by Niantic.
Everything is now player run and the game is on autopilot
