Event Idea. Around the Globe in 80 links.
Ive been playing this game 6 months now. I played POGO for a long time, but I have been exposed to many MMOs and other quest/team based games for decades. Here is my concept. It needs work, but I think the general idea sounds epic.
Each team is given a brand new key to a portal that is not hackable until one of the teams completes the trip around Earth. It will be assumed that it must travel thru all time zones, and a minimum of 22k miles... I need help with the idea, so I am posting here.
So far I know the structure would be with the following criteria.
It is required to travel via active links. Fields do not come into play.
If the link is broken before the key is picked up, the key is returned to the previous owners inventory, and Comms is notified.
If a key is sent over a link and not picked up within 30 minutes, The LINK is broken.
If the opposing team picks up the key, The key will be sent back to the previous owners inventory with a short time penalty before it can be re-transmitted over a link.
The best part - Everyone in the game will be given 7 days notice for the start of the event as to coordinate the path, and block potential paths other teams would use.
In order to win the game, a user on one of the teams must successfully field OVER the portal AND Link into the inside of the field to the portal itself. (This is something up for debate heavily - I think this could be fun, but im totally open to ideas, Since NO CELL portals are very common, this could limit success based on non game related hardware.)
I have honestly debated starting this personally, but it would have to be Niantic managed because anyone can farm another key and fake it. Im open to ideas. I will edit this post as I find quality suggestions.

If I'm reading this right (and I'm quite possibly not) what you are suggesting is a variation on the 'shard' game (more info here: https://ingress.fandom.com/wiki/Shard)
It's a game mechanic that hasn't been used in a while. If I remember correctly, the last international shard game was 1-2 years ago. I forget exactly what happened, but I think it just petered out because noone figured out what the destination for the shards was supposed to be.
Anyway, there hasn't been any global game of this kind for some time. If I had to guess why, it's because this sort of thing ends up in an orgy of spoofing allegations and counter-allegations and isn't worth the hassle it causes Niantic.
The idea sounds cool though.
And a Global shard event has just been announced. Lol at me.
Thats funny...
I saw that post and I was like... Did Niantic take my idea?
Glad to know a person had knowledge like you.
