If they moved away from this forum software, but still had a forum, is there a better one to use? Been a while since I’ve run forums so I’m not sure these days
IMHO it isn't the software. Niantic could convert this to vbulletin, phpbb, mybb, or whatever else. It won't improve until niantic decides to get engaged and active with their own community.
Shush, they are a new company, its a BETA site, its uhh...oh wait, its on PAR for Ingress. Half finished, we QA it for them, they might fix in the future, ect. Don't get your hopes up. They keep acting like they are trying to be all grown up and maybe actually advertise their game, but yeah whatever.

I could see them completely abandoned or just restarting the forums, really needs some moderation.

The forum software is fine. Niantic has simply abandoned them.
It really isn't... The capabilities of vanilla forums don't even compare to early 2000 phpbb forums..
The only thing it has going for it is that Niantic doesn't need to host it themselves

It’s like they’re very nearly there to advertising and pulling in new users and then…they just run out of money/resources?
Hard to pull in new users if they can't get past the "accept terms" dialog without getting a "something went wrong" error
