[Suggestion] Showing Battle Beacon Victories

GrogyanGrogyan ✭✭✭✭✭

Been thinking alot about this over the course of this Anomaly series, and for a while for the past few years

Just how difficult would it be to show on the Septicycle scoreboard to show Battle Beacon Victories?

I have quickly mocked up one method

There is an awful lot of wasted space on this screen that can easily be utilized to show bate Beacon Victories over the Septicycle

This is another quick mock up idea

  • All Battle Beacons?

Could be a way to encourage more scanning. (Seven scans make a beacon at septicycle change.) Scoring could outweigh people's disappointment that there's no way to Overclock enable portals they've scanned. But maybe not.

When a beacon goes off on a portal I own, and no one is there (like when septicycle change is in the middle of the night) - I don't get personal credit for a battle beacon BUT the portal gets a victory beacon in my faction's color, with my faction winning all the points.

    Yeah, from all battle beacons

As for scanning for a Battle Beacon

This is something that is an option...

I was thinking more along the lines of gaining Battle Beacons as rewards for Bounties

Also in all that blank space in the scores - I thought they'd put Scout Controller.

    I think Niantic expected it to be a point of pride. "What? You took my Scout Controller? Oh no you don't get to do that" {Runs to portal to re-scan enough times to re-take Controller.}

But without it on the scoreboard, nobody cares.

Instead, when I get a Comm message that my Scout Controller was lost - I think it's great! Hey look, AgentX is at the welcome center! or AgentY seems to be doing that mission we did last summer!

There's a lot of room for improvement on the scoreboard that's for sure. There's been several good suggestions for how to improve it. But over the years nothing has changed nor do I suspect it ever will. Maybe they should team up with whoever made the agent stats program and do something similar for cells. The scoreboard is outdated and rarely even looked at. Make it more interesting and maybe you'll spark some interest.

When portal scans are a feature not supported by all devices, seems keeping score for the result of scanning is a bit useless of a cycle metric?

Not really, I am going to write up another post as a suggestion for Bounties in an or so

All of these ideas are dumb because even fewer agents care about battle beacons and scout controllers than care about fielding.

might as well call it the P2P scoreboard

Why bother look at something if it doesnt affects the average player. Only a handful of agents are producing the most MU of value anyways

After 10 years its time they did something new with local scoreboards

That's true, the scoreboard just shows who has the most gas money and time on their hands. Nobody really cares about making fields anymore. There are only a few players left and it's just used as a driving game. The desire to continue playing leaves most people. It's extremely monotonous. If you don't have a car then you can't compete on the scoreboard. So why even look at it? The scoreboard needs to change.

    The reasons for many players at not being interested in the score;

    * Is when one faction just dominates time and time again.

    * No rewards for winning septiycles or awarding the highest MU earners

    * Local play has no value to the overall score

My idea is to use Battle Beacons to drive the local scoreboard.

In that I mean, at the end of the first Checkpoint of a new Septicycle, the scores of all Battle Beacon Victories, or overall Battle Beacon points drives a multiplier for MU for the week, not carrying over to the next Septicycle.

Battle Beacon points for the rest of the Septicycle will accumulate and carry over to be scored at the first CP of the next new Septiycle.

    Example

    Resistance score 59 points

    Enlightened score 71 points

With up to a 200 % multiplier (example only) for grabs

    Then

Resistance score 90.8% of their MU

Enlightened score 109.2% of their MU

All MU for the rest of the week gained by players would be multiplied by this depending on their faction.

Rewards need to be issued out to the top (5?) players for each Faction with Very Rare Battle Beacons and maybe other things

3 for 1st place in your faction

    2 for 2nd and 3rd places

    1 for 4th and 5th places

The Ingress team also hinted last year about Machina scoring MU too, although I reckon this is mostly bad IMO.

Battle Beacons were meant to have a more meaningful player experience, and like a lot of new features added to Ingress in past years, never fully finished.

The scoreboard in Ingress was brought in in 2013 and the aim was to award players and Factions with "something" but that plan fell as new featured were worked on. And it just needs finishing up/cleaning up.

There are areas that have zero competition and fields stay up for months if not years at a time. When all you have to do is recharge a few portals for months at a time to keep the score then what's the point? The scoreboard doesn't reflect actual activity. Stagnation gets rewarded every cycle. There has to be a different metric to motivate players. MU isn't motivating anyone. If anything it's making sure fields never drop and nothing new ever happens. And yes more players would help but that's never going to happen without advertising. Ingress is at a stalemate.

I already make it clear on social media at every opportunity, tagging Brian and Masa, about their need to advertise Ingress.

And Niantic Corporate marketing team to do their part and ensure that their social media is balanced to show other games other than pogo are worth playing.

We absolutely, without a doubt need the Ingress team to market Ingress more.

But this is a different discussion.

Whereas if we come up with new engaging gameplay or enhancing existing content, that may help.

And I totally understand that the scoreboard is not something everyone is keen on chasing. But there are quite a number of players who do.

And quite a lot of players who feel they can't compete especially if they don't drive.
