Portal Scanning always results in Fair submissions?

Lately all the portal Scanning for VPS activation has only been resulting in Fair submissions.

Granted, it's hard to keep track of with 3?!? Different interfaces between the wayfarer app, the desktop lightship site, and the mobile lightship site, and this is coming from someone currently participating in the 8th wall hackathon.

Has anyone *recently* (like this week) seen any new overclocks come online, or aware of any invisible rules or advice that could be impacting localisation ratings?

I really need more VPS locations to test out my hackathon submission.

  • I’ve been having the same problem. Every time I submit more scans and reactive for Overclock it only comes back as “fair” even when the email received said activation was successful.

I got a Wayspot come back with "good" about 5 days ago which activated the corresponding portal in Ingress a day or so later. I really don't have anything smart to say except that more scans at different times of the day might help.

I did notice in the past that the quality check might take a while, so if the activations were recent, maybe the checks just aren't complete yet.

If you needs VPS to localise against something, you can use the Wayfarer app to create Private Scans that you'll be able to use for development.

it only comes back as “fair” even when the email received said activation was successful.

No matter if a Wayspot is categorised as "Fair" or "Good", VPS was activated successfully, hence the email. The two categories just determine how easy a Wayspot can be localised against and is only determined after the Wayspot got activated and you got the email.

  • @InvestigateXM Have you had any 'fair' localizations come through for overclockable portals?

I'm wondering if you always get fair, even if the scans are good quality, if it violates the rules shown on the desktop version of lightship, despite the 'written' rule of more then 10 scans, at least 1, 5 hours apart.

No, as far as I can tell, a Wayspot needs to be "Good" to be activated as an overclocked portal in Ingress. The Wayspot I mentioned was initially categorised as Good and had Overclock, but was demoted to Fair after a while which disabled Overclock on the portal. I had to scan it the 5 times to attempt a reactivation and reevaluation which brought it back to Good and reactivated Overclock.

I didn't pay attention to what the geospartial browser showed exactly before trying to activate most of the portals around me, but I'm pretty sure that at least that one scan during night is not needed for Good. That being said, all the portals that I activated and which got marked as good had a ton of scans from me and others, about 30 minimum. It's probably really just a matter of scanning a ton in different lighting.

  • Ah, that explains why I've seen some portals lose their Overclock. Is there any reason why a portal would be demoted? I'd hate to see a portal lose Overclock just because some PGO player scanned their feet.

Once new scans are uploaded to the database, the backend automatically performs some sort of quality check on it. I assume one feet scan out of 50 good scans wont be enough to demote a Wayspot, but if it continues to get feet scans, the system might assume that the surroundings of the Wayspot have changed, discarding the old "good" scans and trying to mesh together the new "bad" scans.

This is all 100% assumption tho, but I'd guess it works somewhere along these lines

The VPS submissions that I did scans on were initially Fair and then after a week it went to Good. I also have been getting emails long after the fact for being pushed to the VPS status. It's some Lightship backend check that might be outside of the knowns.

I had several wayspots with several dozen scans on them, fail to activate for no apparent reason.

And I've had other wayspots lose their VPS, ie not enabled, and require another 10 scans to be even considered to be worth submitting their VPS elegibility

  • I have been scanning and reactivating daily.

I have nearly 200 scans on one portal and nearing 100 scans on some other ones. Do you think daily reactivations is inadvertently keeping me locked at "Fair" since you said it seems there is a deeper background process going on?

I'm not interested in doing any more scanning.

The new system implemented for scanning is utter rubbish. I've been having rejection after rejection, scans being 'too dark' in the middle of the afternoon in broad daylight. Portal not visible, when I've been walking round it.

Whoever came up with this rubbish system needs their cards.
