IFS St. George, UT - 5/7/2022 - Ironman World Championships

This month our Utah First Saturday was virtually held in St. George, Utah in order to spotlight the Ironman World Championship that took place in and around the St. George Area on the first Saturday in May.

The Ironman World Championship race, consisting of a 2.4 mile (3.86km) swim, a 112 mile (180.25km) bike ride, and a full 26.2 mile (42.2km) marathon, is the culmination of each season's Ironman competitions.

Since the creation of the race in 1978, the Ironman World Championships have been held in Hawaii, the birthplace of the race. However, the 2021 Ironman World Championship was delayed and rescheduled to be held in St. George, Utah in May of 2022 due to COVID19 concerns and quarantine protocols in Hawaii.

There are over three dozen Ironman Triathlon races throughout the world that enable qualification for the Ironman World Championships. Professional athletes qualify for the championship through a point ranking system, where points are earned based on their final placement in Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events.

The top 50 male and top 35 female professionals in points qualify for the championship. Amateur athletes qualify for the championship by receiving slots allocated to each age group's top finishers in a qualifying event.

St. George has a long history of playing host to both full and half Ironman races and is known as one of the more difficult courses in the series due to its elevation gains and warm temperatures.
