The Smurfs and Frogs origin in Ingress
How did the concept of Frogs and Smurfs came about to nick name the factions? The game is nothing about either.

What you talking about? Clearly the smurfs want to protect the planet from the invading frogs (I barely know the ingress story, its something along the lines of enl are helping aliens, res don't want the aliens)
frogs are green, smurfs are blue
frogs are green, smurfs are blue
frogs are green, smurfs are blue
@saarstahl Frogs have a wide range of colours and are not all green; they are real animals. Smurfs is a cartoon. But that’s beside the point. Doesn’t explain why the origin of the faction nickname. Who came up with it? How did it get started?
Good idea to read up the story/directives. Makes the game more fun knowing the concept of the story line.
With any cause (reality or fantasy) that involves choosing sides, isn’t it a good idea to know the story behind it, how it originated, and goals before choosing the cause/issue that you want to support?
Sometimes yes, sometimes it's fun not knowing. Personally I picked res cause I like the colour blue and I like the idea of being in a resistance, even if the resistance were the bad guys
Someone (or multiple someones) used the term, it stuck. More people started using it, it spread. The end. Not everything needs a dramatic origin story.
Understandable 😄
Perfect example is how rumour starts and spread 😄
Frogs are horrible critters that live in slimy ponds.
Smurfs are highly sophisticated and specialise in various areas and always win.
The end ;)
The nicknames just kind of stuck 🤷♂️
Quite the reality you created for yourself 😂
Once it makes you happy and you’re not malicious to other players in the process.
Wait a minute. Are we the baddies?
I have froggy friends
i never liked the terms frogs or smurfs.
@mortuus I agree with you, I don’t like those terms either. It is being used in a derogatory tone.
Toads has typically been meant as more derogatory. Being called a frog is respect in comparison.
Also, there's this:
A must have for any Anomaly afterparty!
@kiloecholima @InvestigateRusR
That’s a fun spin on things 😂
Who resistance? Pretty sure we are protecting the planet from invading aliens .... I think, I'm sure that's like the only thi g I've picked up on from the story
@gazzas89 Did you read the directives? If you did you would have known it not alien invasion, but two alien species at war, and it’s overlapping in our Universe. ENL is out to warn us of what’s coming. There has been twists to the plot. Those messages from the portal glyphs could be malicious because you don’t know who it’s coming from, but it’s coming either from ENL, Nemesis, or …

Storyline from other sources are not accurate. The Niantic source is most accurate obviously 😄
So yes, ENL are the good guys so far in the directives
RES* you mean. In the 28 days of Ingression, NEMESIS told us that when the Ingression occurred, the only thing the Shapers and N'Zeer could agree on was the enslavement of Humanity. They basically entered our world, brutally tortured and/or ate a bunch of people, and then drew lines in the sand and formed an uneasy truce. In this context, the Resistance were right to resist the Shapers and the Enlightened were wrong to embrace them.
... That is, if you believe NEMESIS. They came from an alternate reality with different circumstances, and our reality could very well be very different. Or they could be lying through their teeth. Even if I play as Resistance, I prefer to keep the Shapers' intentions a mystery since it adds a bit of intrigue.
More on topic, I am 100% of the belief that faction slang is based on Haribo gummy flavors. I look forward to the addition of the Berries faction.
Best way to catch up on the lore is to watch the Ingress anime series.
ETA: On Netflix. 11 episodes, about half hour each, created in 2018.
I started the Netflix series and find it boring. Only made it to episode2, but will try to watch it again @MargariteDVille
As always, thank you for your discussion input
So for the candy tradition, does ENL faction eat the Smurfs candies and RES eats the Frogs candy?
