Niantic Social Begins Open Beta
In our last post, we announced that Niantic Social was in Closed Beta and would be rolling out to more Agents in the coming months. Today, we’re excited to announce that Niantic Social is in Open Beta, and we can’t wait to hear your feedback on all of the new features!
Niantic Social: Home for Your Friends and Communities Across Games
Niantic Social is an opt-in feature that enables you to communicate and coordinate real-world gameplay, manage your Niantic Profile and Niantic Friends list, and engage with communities around you, all from directly within Ingress.
__
Starting today, we are providing access to Niantic Social for all C.O.R.E. Agents around the world. Once you have access to Niantic Social, you will be able to invite other Agents directly from Ingress via COMM, Agent Profiles, or (coming soon) your referral link. The best way to get access to Niantic Social is by asking a friendly Agent who already has access.

Get Started with Niantic Social
Our Open Beta includes the following features to help you connect with other Ingress Agents and Niantic gamers:
- Private conversations with Direct and Group Messages: Messaging on Niantic Social is the most direct and secure way to communicate with other Agents. No more hoops, hurdles, and URLs from strangers: whether you’re recruiting an Agent that has just captured their first Portal or want to message an ally Agent in the field, Niantic Social is the best way to start chatting. Niantic Social also includes a Profile where you can verify Niantic IDs and game accounts, so you always know exactly who you’re talking to.
- Easily organize meetups: Use the Events feature to coordinate group meetups for Ops, First Saturdays, Anomalies, Field Art, and more! The real-time location sharing feature has also been improved, making it easier than ever to coordinate and keep track of other Agents during these meetups.
- Finding new Agents and Communities near you: Public communities can be created (and joined) by anyone that has access to Niantic Social. While private communities are great for classified faction discussions such as Ops and strategy, public communities are a place for Agents to connect, socialize, and discuss all things Ingress.
- Ingress Official Community Code: whnepURT
We look forward to seeing the different ways you use Niantic Social, and we’ll be keeping a close eye in this forum space and in the Ingress Official Community for your feedback. Coming Soon on Dec. 22, 2021: Referral Links
Once you finish the first-time onboarding, you will be presented with a referral link that you can share with other Agents. Please note that this referral link requires that Agents and new recruits have Ingress downloaded on their phone.

We are planning to add all CORE subs by end of today! If you have not received your invite yet, please hang tight :)
It looks like the app is still showing it's in closed beta when you click into it as a CORE member. So uh, any friendly agents here able to provide access?
Looks like you missed it by a few seconds lol
If you don't wanna wait, you can ping me in Ingress, otherwise, it looks like you'll get access by the end of the day.
Hi @Juuuuuice is there somewhere to provide feedback, bugs, and suggestions for improvements since this is a beta? I'm hoping it isn't via a ticket only because then no one else would be able to see previously shared items. Thanks!@Juuuuuice
Hey @arealwerewhale ! Please provide feedback around Niantic Social in this forum the same way that you would for any other Ingress feedback. We'll be keeping a close eye here, and we're excited to see all the lively discussion and feedback :)
Kind of intrusive on the profile. Cuts off the bottom of the custom avatar. I would think a smaller box with an envelope icon would suffice.
Very interesting
Are there any plans to add a web or desktop client?
Why do I get this? My agent name is the combination of my two surnames "Espinoza Piche" is not "offensive language"
Cual será la diferencia entre el chat y com...
No le veo aplicabilidad Yaque por acá no hay muchos agentes...Más bien implementen las notificaciones de dron y cápsula :)
@Juuuuuice
So each time I try to choose a Niantic ID, it shows my ign is an invalid username. Tried lower case letters just in case, still doesn't seem to work. I am a CORE subscriber. Any ideas?
I'm receiving the same thing.
Not sure where to go for this, but I clicked on it just to see what it would do, and the user name I wanted was "invalid"? I did not know the character length, restrictions, etc. And I tried a random one and it works, but I never wanted to use it and can't find a way to change or delete the Niantic ID. How would I go about this?
Me too. I also had the same error when I tried to reserve my name a few months back. Gave up after trying again and again for several days.
Still no way to generate a new invite code and expire the old one? If a chat is compromised, everything is public and you can't stop more people from joining...
@EvilSuperHeros @Viscum @Espicheza @WeatherDan We've created a ticket for this and will be sure to add you four to the list!
I found it very interesting. But I don't feel safe sharing information in groups, I would have to improve the group's security options.
NIA Social is just a reskinned Discord server. Has anyone figured out a functional invite code so we can just join it directly using the Discord App rather than the clunky Ingress scanner interface?
Yes! More dating options, love it. Ingress: The Romance.
Is there an option for accessing this on a computer? I hate hate hate dealing with text on a tiny little phone screen with no keyboard.
Soon TM
How to turn this off? This is really spamming my notifications and i don’t want to see it.
@X3N04L13N
You can set your prefered notification settings on each server and/or channel.
Thanks, found it.
Well, this in-game social chat is fun and all, but since iOS users don't get active notifications, you don't know when something happens in game whilst your chatting. Also, the status bar is not visible on iOS, white text on white background. Friend requests also don't seem to work on iOS, but do work on android.
Thanks
How do i permanently opt out of this after joining once? i don't want notifications spam, and the UX is too awful to try and use this on mobile. If this requires someone from Niantic to do this, consider this post an official request to be removed from the beta.
Hello,
During the creation of my Niantic social account I inadvertently entered the wrong @name for my social account.
I would NOT anticipate that players could choose a new name on the linked social platform as that would cause all sorts of problems later.
Please advise on how I can change my account name.
Also please review the initial setup process so that others won't have the same problem as I am unclear how this error occurred outside of me misreading the instructions.
Thank you for creating, supporting and furthering my favorite game experience.
Me too.
Just leave the group the notifications are coming from. In addition, you can mute all notifications from Niantic Social through its settings.
