Second Sunday for October

Hi everyone -
I know that we haven't announced our Q4 event schedule yet (it's coming s**n), but I know there are a lot of questions about Second Sunday for October so folks can plan if they're going to visit someplace or if they want to submit banners ... so I'm kinda being a little sneaky and
There WILL be Second Sunday for October and it will be, last I saw, any six missions.
What happens beyond October First Saturday and Second Sunday, we wait...

Jesus ******* Christ. RIP MD badge value. How come it's so hard to separate this from true Mission Days??
Thanks for the update, it’s really appreciated @NianticThia
Thanks for the update. Avoiding the usual “Soon™️“? 😆
I don’t care about this being separate from the usual Mission Day badges. Keep them all going. Let everyone have a chance to get the badge.
Also, glad to hear the Q4 event schedule is on the way. I was starting to run low on Eleventh Doctor GIFs that were semi-relevant.
I can't even start describing how excited I am about October's Second Sunday. It will be my 20th Mission Day! Onyx!!!!
Congratulations. Excellent work! 🤩
Thanks, @NianticThia .
If November and onward Second Sundays are altered in format or postponed, can we please get a longer lead time for notification on this?
We know the pandemic makes it difficult for events to be planned and drone-based missions are not currently A Thing, but this might be helpful to agents wishing to make travel plans for Second Sundays.
Just a suggestion / request. Thanks again for keeping us all posted, and stay safe!
Thanks heaps for this announcement. I really appreciate being able to plan for this. Second Sunday has been an excellent addition and I’ve really enjoyed having something safe to do each month in Ingress despite the pandemic
The badge being easier to access for players that can't attend Mission Days doesn't take away from the time, effort, and so on that you or others have put in previously for the badge.
Second Sunday was sorted out to accommodate for present times, so it's no different to the First Saturday at Home events.
I don't see how some players that previously had the medal locked being able to get it now makes a difference to anyone else's style of play or past efforts.
COVID has made getting MD impossible until this solution. In a normal year I would have gotten perhaps 4 MD ticks, so really, I'm down 6 from COVID. This solution also allows people to choose missions in safe locations and doesn't require major travel for those in rural locations. I call it a win.
Don't 👏 let 👏 the 👏 achievement 👏 of 👏 others 👏 ruin 👏 your 👏 achievements 👏.
If you don't like it, you don't have to participate. If you don't want the "badge to lose value" you are more than welcome to travel to place you haven't been to before and do a MD event there.
I know a ton of us appreciate SS MD and I am happy they are continuing.
Edit: Yes, I have been travelling to different cities over the last 3 SS MDs and I intend to do so in the future as well.
Agreed. I live in North England and the closest official MD missions are either Birmingham or Cardiff. I have a vulnerable family member presently, and also got deemed "vulnerable" for a large portion of the on going pandemic due to having finished chemo when the UK went into lockdown, so I really don't want to take any risks until I know it's a lot safer to travel further than the hospital and the shops.
This. I've got unique Mission Day cities with official missions lined up through February, which is when I'll hopefully get onyx if Second Sundays continue until then.
I am very happy that Second Sunday is continuing in October, I hope this event will continue in future months
Respectfully disagree. The badge has always been an "adventure/trip, but not as big of one as an anomaly or part of an anomaly" point
What's next? Couch anomaly?
Thank you for your feedback; I will pass this along for consideration!
Both factions have made use of remote intel support for years. Umbra had decoding challenges that could be done from anywhere. But perhaps the closest to "couch anomaly" might be the remote recharging that's already been a part of quite a few anomaly series.
In October I'll get my 40th Mission day by walking to the park by my house.
I'm going to be one of a very few people in North America with wings on this badge.
Sure would have been nice to have gotten this important milestone by travelling somewhere new and cool and discovering unique locally interesting things.
I get that Ingress is easier than it used to be, glyphing for keys makes Connector easier, fracking makes Purifier easier, but I was really hoping Mission Day would stay special.
Second Sunday is really fun but IT NEEDS ITS OWN BADGE.
You can though. Find a place on the map you haven't been (or even a place you have been but maybe didn't see as much of it as you wished) that has at least 6 missions and make a day trip out of it. It's as easy or difficult as you want to make it.
I disagree. Imagine if Niantic decided that Onyx Connector was too hard and lowered the bar to 20,000. I bet a lot of people who pushed HARD to get that 100,000 would be pretty upset.
Ingress is a competitive game, with lots of different ways to compete. People work hard for their showy status badges.
On the flip side -- why would people work their fingers off creating traditional exploration Mission Days for a safer future if there's no badge gated behind them?
Thanks for the heads-up. We appreciate it.
Being able to safely do a "MD" i think is inportant right now, people downplaying covid is one of the factors that made and kept this mess going... so playing it safe is a good thing IMHO.
Looking foward to the day where we can all travel to somewhere else without too much worry.
I understand those upset with the easier badge requirement, but my perspective may be a bit skewed since when I started playing, it was in a more rural area. I thankfully wasn't there long, but it was a 7-9 hour drive to a major city, so it was really difficult for most of the community to participate in events. Not everyone could afford to travel, or to take time off work. So I appreciate that it opened the event for more agents.
I would be totally cool if it was a separate badge, though. That way the people who have traveled don't feel cheated, but others still have a chance to do events.
Sad, sad moment for Mission Days... :( I appreciate the effort to bring some MD-like events in COVID times. I really like the format of Second Sunday. But... It's not MD and it should not be MD. Separate badge - this would be fine, as this is separate event.
MD was not (only) about doing missions nor about exploring new places. MD was a whole, big event, with someone planning the missions, someone planning the meetings between players, some swag, etc. It was al about community effort, with doing missions together as a bonus.
You can't mimic this with any six missions - even if you will travel to new places (we have banners for this, you know?). You can't mimmic this with forcing re-do of "official" MD missions from former MDs. It's MD without everything, that counted in MD. No MD Magic anymore...
I want real MDs to come back. I want events with enough gravity to encourage agents to travel moderate distances. I want the mission quality that MD events bring - highlighting parts of a city that sometimes even locals haven't had a chance to see. I want the non-competitive xfac-friendly atmosphere that helps break down some of the animosity (note: I also love the competition and strategy in anomalies and want that to come back too, but it's important to have both).
I was fortunate enough to be able to go to one of the real MDs held alongside a van event last month, and get that experience, and it made me so happy. Randomly running into people on the street doing missions - some I already knew, some I didn't. And the magic of MD missions vs a typical banner is that you aren't just going down some random street because it happens to be between interesting places - every mission showcases something different and interesting - so I got to see new and interesting things I had never seen before, even though it was in a city I've been to dozens of times.
I don't care in the slightest that my MD badge is "diluted" by the relative ease at which agents can now earn credit. My only concern is that the Second Sunday badge ticks reduce some of the gravity of future real MD events and lead to fewer agents making the effort to show up. So when larger in-person events resume, then I would advocate reducing or eliminating the "easy" badge tick. But until that time, let's try to keep folks engaged and get more people out and doing missions safely on their own.
Maybe not any unique six but those which are not completed before , will add some little bit of challenge here .
As I guess , we nearly completed all missions in our local area and we have to travel a bit far to get a new mission !🤔
So you're telling me you're choosing to devalue your own achievement? You could make the weekend a trip to anywhere you want to venture but no, you decide it's better to complain about being able to do it from your own area?
It being easier for others doesn't devalue the efforts others have made in the past.
If you want to think that the game being a bit more accessible is a negative thing, then I'm going to assume you must hate new portals popping up or some of the newer medals like Epoch.
I'm not advocating for all medals to be easier to achieve but there are some that are incredibly inaccessible to a portion of players for a variety of reasons. The attitude of "don't make it easier, we worked hard for this medal" is one I'll never understand. I've worked hard for my medals, including event ones such as Didact - which I got on gold in the middle of chemotherapy, by total accident. Someone getting a medal slightly easier than me has no effect on how I or anyone else plays the game and if a few aspects of the game being more accessible means new players, then I'm all for it.
With the Second Sundays, people can still travel in some places if they're able and choose to. It's hardly ruining the game.
It's not about the game. Second Sunday is fun. It's just completely not MD. Not even close.
Jesus ******* Christ. Can you be any more of a crybaby?
Here's a genius idea: if you don't like this event DON'T PARTICIPATE IN IT!
I don't like #IFS and I haven't participated in any of them.
Interesting example, that. Imagine if they changed Sojourner to increment by 7 with every Epoch tick. One of these things is not like the other.
There have always been hard badges and easy badges. I don't have a problem with that. But don't change the rules so dramatically halfway.
