I've only had 1 of the 5 portals I've tried to scan with the new system actually work. Most of the time I am getting scan failed. So, is the answer that if we are scanning a large object like a mural or a building you want us to focus on just a small segment of it on each scan?
My experience that this new avatar is good and bad at the same time. Good because I like the design but bad because many times when I am with the Aerodyne Avatar I cannot see portals, keys, Capsules, Mods that are below my location. Many times I have missed the opportunity to do a CF because I could not see the portal because Aerodyne Avatar did not allow me to see it.
On a related question, I thought you wanted 360 degree scans of objects. How will the scanner behave when on the other side of the object from the portal picture?
What are you even scanning? The first one looks like you’re in an alley, in the dark. The other has a few chairs in a far off spot. The last one looks like you’re in a telephone booth. What is your experience when you scan something like a statue or a building? I’ve scanned several hundred objects with the updated scan tool and I haven’t experienced a single fail.
Im pretty critical of Niantic and have more or less begged for a response from them regarding the scanning features, but I also realize I have to work with what they’ve given me to some degree. I can’t scan a sidewalk and expect glorious results.
You mention a building. Back away as far as you can and scan as much as you can. I believe you can cheat this a little even by clicking on the scan button, walking out of range and then hit the record button.
Had this happen a couple times in a row. Scanning and double tapped the record/stop button to finish the scan and hit the retake button. This froze the app and I had to restart to continue playing. Thought it was a fluke, so spammed the stop button and was able to repeat it a couple times. Will restart the phone and try it later on to see if it happens again.
What I've seen on the forums was mostly from players' tests and not official word from Niantic, which would have been nice. But yes, the other issue is that portals disappear from drone view, and you need to manipulate your keys or restart the game in order to see them again.
Wouldn't life be boring if everything was immediately obvious? Figuring out the exact rules about which portals are visible as standard in drone view was a wonderful pleasure for me last summer. Frustrating at times, but it fed and encouraged my enthusiasm for drone play. I still check the view from portals where a slight error in the expected border would change visible portals - just in case there is a different rule for rounding than that used at the moment. Haven't found any errors for ages.
I find the key behaviour a feature, not an issue. To make my 156km journey, I went to collect keys to make it possible - far more of an adventure/exploration than simply dropping the drone at one end and taking a more direct drive home.
The key-requiring portal disappearing again - be careful what you tap. Requiring of correct technique should not automatically be "an issue". Once you develop the knack, it is quite easy. Until the overlapping graphics obscured the area of screen distant portal appear - but Niantic say that should be fixed in 2.78.1.
Being able to restrict which key requiring portals are loaded in drone view to the one of interest (if it was all keys I owned it would be troublesome to identify the portal I want while flying around local towns) is an advantage for me. The one aspect that does look like a bug (IMO) is that you cannot use a key to get a portal into drone view if it is close enough to your actual location that you can see it in the scanner.

Portal scanning doesn't work anymore.
Keeps crashing, while scanning.
'Completed' scans Fail everytime

Ill work on an example later today.
Since the update, my few scans have been successful, they included a building and tennis court, so big stuff, and I used upload later.

You call them features, I call them bugs. Let's agree to disagree.
