Update 9:27AM PDT Agents, we're looking into the event metric not increasing. Unfortunately, the hacks are likely not going to be backfilled once this issues is fixed. We apologize for the inconvenience and will update as soon as it is resolved.
Agents successfully generated enough Kinetic energy during the Optima Kinetic Challenge to repel NEMESIS associate Optima’s advances. But what did Optima seek to accomplish, and were they operating alone? Agents, we need your help to research and report for potential threats that may still be lurking in the Portal Network. To do this, we are asking that all Agents hack as many unique Portals as possible (Drone hacks included) between Friday, April 9th 16:00 UTC to Monday, April 12th 16:00 UTC.
We will be measuring Unique Portal Hacks (UPH) during this three day window. By Monday, April 12th 16:00 UTC, Agents must meet a global challenge threshold of 3,500,000 unique hacks combined (the sum of all Agent individual UPH) in order for us to better understand what is happening.
- If a Portal was hacked the day before the event started, and then hacked during the event, it would still count as a UPH for this challenge
- Progress of the unique hack counts will be updated once per day on the News Feed
- There will be a new event metric added to your Agent Profile for the duration of the Global Challenge to help you monitor the number of unique Portals you have hacked
The following bonuses will be enabled during the event:
- Cool-down time of Drone Mark l will be reduced from 60 minutes to 10 minutes
- 2X AP for Glyph Hacking (Drone included)
- Hacking friendly Portals will also earn 100AP
If the global challenge threshold is achieved successfully, there will also be a limited time reward from Friday, April 23rd 16:00 UTC to Friday, April 30th 16:00 UTC that will enable:
- Damage of Level 4 through 6 XMP Bursters increased by 1 level
- 2X AP for Link and Field destroy, (187 → 374AP for Links; 750 → 1500AP for Fields)
- Portal recharge earns 100AP
As always, please remember to be aware of your surroundings. We encourage players to follow local health and safety guidelines when playing Ingress (such as wearing masks and maintaining at least six feet/two meters of distance from other people).

This metric is purely to track your own contributions for the global goal and doesn't go towards a medal or something like that?

A new medal would be great but I can understand why there isn't one
What does it mean that after this event we will get the Optima Kinetic Period II challenge, considering that the first period of the Optima Kinetic Challenge begins with Resonate the World Weekend Event?
But no event badge?
Did Niantic learn nothing from the Cassandra Neutralizer challenge?
When you only set rewards for destroying without any increase in rewards for building, you get areas that go gray without any impetus for people to relink and refield. In this proposal, an agent earns hundreds of AP more to destroy a field than to build one. This will turn into an AP denial game where people intentionally don't relink/field because they don't want their opponents to earn more AP than them.
Please fix the reward structure, or else it will be a week of stupidity, just like with the Cassandra challenge.

The rewards for destruction are awarded AFTER the challenge.
The Cassandra challenge rewards were during the challenge which was a bad choice.
I'm talking solely of the rewards week. The net outcome is exactly the same; it will be a week of people not building to deny their opponents AP.
If I hack a portal and also hack that same portal with my drone, does that count as one or two unique portal hacks?

No badge event, nothing for individual agents to challenge them. At least there is a counter.
Smashing for a reward? Increased xmp levels? So yet another underdog event? Which means no building will happen that week...

@thesolo Will take a moment to provide add'l info that these bonuses will be enabled during our next event, so players won't face any disadvantages in giving the opposing Faction AP advantages for destroying. All we can say for now is it will be an event with a new twist and these bonus rewards will definitely come in handy!
