I worked on a dev team once, long ago. We had a horrible track record. 17 of 18 projects were delivered either late or incomplete in the previous 12 months. Then we got these 2 interns for the summer. They were given 1 project and they nailed it right on. On time, on scope, they even had extra features in there that weren't part of the original scope.
That's the thing. When you have a cushy guaranteed job, it's easy to lose your edge. When you have something to prove, you get all kinds of juices flowing.
