In the description, "This dashcam caught video featuring Drone Mark I."
Was looking to see where the name 'Drone Mark 1' came from.
I'm not sure if this is a common naming convention for drones in general BUT
Found that it is a series of drones named Mark I from a roleplaying game called "Faster Than Light", does Niantic own the IP rights to that? I know they got in legal trouble before for stealing an anomaly medal image in the past
In the drone development industry it is pretty common to identify the version of a product by writing the mark number after its name, there is nothing proprietary about it.
You have any references to that?
When you google "drone mark i", I'm not getting anything
Was thinking it was a trope, searched it on tvtropes:
Both results were for FTL
More results for 'drone mark i' being from that IP
cheatch I work in the drone industry and I know that "Mark" is not a word that can be used to trademark a product. Besides, you can find the meaning it has in this case here https://www.wordhippo.com/what-is/another-word-for/mark.html
So best case scenario, Niantic doesn't get into legal trouble because the name is too generic.
Just by doing google search "drone mark i", it does seem like Niantic is stealing their drone name from their game IP.
Even if its the case, naming the drone after something you can not trademark is probably not the best idea.
Is there any current Ingress characters that did drone research? Maybe name it after him/her.
Not much is known about the development of the drones, but it was revealed early into the 'investigation' https://community.ingress.com/en/discussion/11057/dev-diary-dronenet
Not much is known about Edgar Allan Wright.
Maybe he took the name 'Wright' because of the Wright Brothers and his interest in XM flight.
If so, it might make sense that he would name the drones after early airplanes of the Wright brothers.

It would help explain why has been barely mentioned and only has been seen in one 'Behind The Scanner' episode, maybe he was busy working on drones.
This would be a better look than stealing drone names from the 'Faster Than Light' game imo
@cheatch I am going to guess that you are not a native English speaker? Referring to a developing product, first version/2nd version as mark 1/mark 2 is common and has been done in many industries for many years. A google search on the phrase mark 1 -gospel will show some examples - the first 3 I see are Ironman, an early computer and Jaguar cars.
If calling a game feature "Drone Mark 1" when it is a small remote controilled flying vehicle (widely known with many competing products as a drone), and the first version of it (mark 1), was ever to become part of a successful lawsuit against Niantic, I will lose hope in humanity. But then, I am British,
I understand the 'mark' conception, however 'Faster Than Light' decided to create a whole class of 'Drone Mark I" objects in their game. That's where it starts becoming a question.

What's the top results?
I believe NIA is more creative than this.
It would make more sense to name this drone "EAW Flyer I", that way it is something Niantic can trademark and be original
@cheatch Originally you said the problem was that it looked like Niantic stole the name from another game. Now that I have pointed out the terms are common in English usage you have changed tack that Niantic are merely being unoriginal.
Your beautiful and irrelevant link doesn't even show me a link related to "Faster then Light" until the 4th non-ad link. 2nd is a reddit post referring to the Ingress version.
Do you have a point beyond trolling?
I'd suggest taking a look into the comment and post history of... certain users from time to time🙈
Also, if you encounter one, never forget:
And take good use of Flag, maybe.
Before going any further, make an argument naming the drone after something you can not trademark.
Or just keep labeling me as a 'troll' / 'flag' me.
