Why was the Mission Day badge changed?

in Mission Days
I still have not done a single mission day since the badge was changed, I stopped at 24.
Why, oh why, did Niantic pick an existing badge that people loved, and replace it with one with so many complaints from agents who do lots of mission days? I still wish I hadn't done any mission days, so I don't have that monstrosity on my profile.
I know many of us are motivated by what badges look like. Some of us spend a lot of money to get a particular badge (onyx MD was EXPENSIVE!), so to have it changed after you've already earned it, really sucks.

I havent been to a single MD yet but the new badge looks alot better and compared to the old it didnt even look like a MD badge..
I understand your frustration with having a badge changed after you've worked hard to earn onyx. However, I think in this case the new one looks better.
"So many complaints"
Fine, I'll open the can of worms. Do you mean the complaints that the badge was somehow misogynistic? My problem with the complaints is hoping it wasn't a scapegoat to simply say the redesign sucks.
However, I do have to ask what made you do Mission Days in the first place if a redesign of the badge made you stop? The badge was originally never going to be tiered.
The one explanation I recall Niantic giving on G+ was that they wanted the medal to better represent what agents do at Mission Days. So, from their perspective, the MD logo was cool, but looking at it gave you no hint what the medal was about.
The current medal, at least, tells you it's about something involving... people and directions?
I like to think it portrays 2 agents arguing about where their next mission is, because I always end up trying to help somebody with direction at these events..
I don't much worry about what individual medals look like. I do Mission Days for the challenge of the achievement, not the pretty pictures.
I personally don't dislike the look of the new mission day badge. However I can understand peoples dislike of the badge. Compared to most of the other badges, it just doesn't fit the look/style of all the others.
I just don't like the graphics very much. It looks a bit like drawn by a child. Mission Days is about exploring the world. Maybe a symbolized earth would have been a better logo.
The old badge matched the logo used at events and made marketing sense. Since then, the logo has been updated to include the faction colors and it's fantastic! It would have been much
better for them to udate the badge with the updated logo... There would have been marketing consistency, our swag would still be more closely related and our North American mascot could more easily adapt. I mean, what are they supposed to do...wear a pic of a dude pointing directions to a woman?!? 😂🤣
@GridEXE: It is because the badge is ugly, doesn't look like the others, and vaguely looks like mansplaining. All three.
My first MD was the first tiered one in Seattle, my home town. I had only planned on doing one because it hadn't been tiered up till that point, but then after it was tiered I did a few more while I was at anomalies -- hey, I was there already. And then I figured I could use mission days as an excuse to visit places I had never been before, and to walk a lot, and after a few years got my onyx.
I liked the travel and exploring cities, but the pixels motivate me to do a thing more than the thing itself -- I only walked the long distances and spent a lot of money on travel because of the pixels at the end, I would not have done it if there wasn't a badge to be gotten. I also would not do a thing for an ugly badge e.g. I did not do the Cassandra Neutralizer badge, yuck.
I dislike current design, but never unlocked the badge before or after that they changed It.
I think what help to be more ugly was the new frame and borders.
By the way, a curiosity, the platinum badges: Luminary, Recon and Sage have a strange color comparing to others platinum, and when it's Black the borders is bigger and they fix it on the Ouroboros and IFS badges.
The thing is, who was complaining about the old MD badge? I heard not one complaint. What was Niantic trying to achieve by changing it, or was it just done on someone's whim? It doesn't matter if people like the new one better or not, it didn't have to be changed. The new one is divisive, some like it better but many hate it. How does that help Niantic?
New badge is looking good to me. Myabe some redesign of the other medals is in future?
