Today (Monday, 11 Apr 2022), we're launching Regional Chat in Niantic Social in Ingress 2.91.1. Open the Ingress Main menu > Scores > TOP 3 AGENTS See More > Niantic Social to open Regional Chat for the Scoring Cell you're in, for example AM02-DELTA-01. Any Agent, not just the Top 50, can use this channel to chat with Agents in this Cell-specific Faction chat. Regional Chat can help connect newer Agents who are looking to find others who play Ingress nearby. Note: though the icon is there for cells you are not in, at this time, you can only load the regional chat for the cell in which you are currently located.
Additionally, we're expanding Portal Scan Meshing as an optional feature to more Android devices in Ingress 2.91.1. Meshing helps to visualize what has already been scanned to encourage Agents to continue moving around the Portal, which generates higher quality Portal Scans.
I like regional chats being made by Niantic. Then you don't have to worry about the owners ghosting on the communities that they made.
However, I live in the corner of a cell. I wish that I had the ability to talk to the three cells that are less than ten minutes away from me. (Or maybe allow me to talk in all the cells showing in my scanner?)
In regional chats you have the option of being part of faction only or cross faction chats for the area. Crossfaction chats do display the agents faction through the color of their names. I just tested this with the help of my local enl.
There is an update I dream of, and if brings on the news about two types of storage. One for the items, and the second for the keys. Both can be permanently upgraded just like in Pokemon GO.
Regional faction chats are so exciting! I'm looking forward to a few small improvements such as moving the icon for chat so it's not over the agent's cell rank, maybe adding it to the overall cell score page in some of the empty space, and allowing us to tag each other.
Yeah, it's proven to be quite useless. It adds to bloat, who needs chat if you're oblivious to what is happening in the game when you're chatting. At least with third party apps (that we are already using for years) you'll get notifications from the game.
I'd like the option to opt out and just ignore it.
I also live close to a corner of a cell. I live in cell #1, work in cell #2, can play in cell #3 and #4. Other players move around too, all that within 30km wide city+suburbs area. Will not even try to start a conversation when agents are hopping from cell to cell and their "regional chat" changes.
That's feedback for the "niantic social" team. There are working options: ingress COMM with 20-50km radius, groups on "niantic social" map, city discord/telegram/whatever. Just not "regional chat" separated by cells.
The same can be said about most of the game features. whenever I'm doing missions I rage and waste time at the most basic things. not even mentioning things like awful contrast for playing it in the daylight, completely invisible mission markers, this stupid double textbox entry pop-up (come on don't tell me this is unity problem or something like that there is thousands of unity games that do not have this insane behavior), the game randomly just forgetting that you completed a mission and not showing up the next mission selection box, the weird separation of showing map of all the portals on the map that needs a bunch of clicks to get to, basically doing second Sunday missions is a freaking chore. and then we have removal of useful information from the log such as damage reports, the log turned into some iCandy bloated screen that shows 1/5 of the information that was there in the old scanner. get a notification for attack? you'll be lucky to have the log updated 30 seconds after it, so by the time you can click on the portal it's going to be dead already. that's assuming the game was still running in the background, if it wasn't add another 30 seconds for the startup. the Giant damage report numbers that show up without any rhyme or reason and spam up the entire screen cover up the actual attack area and make it almost impossible to see if you finally killed the portal or not until they all go away again making it more difficult to quickly do actions and move to the next Target. so many things wrong with the client, so many people have complained about it and everything is falling completely on deaf ears. every time there's an update it adds something completely useless or breaks more of existing functionality, meanwhile the client is still not even close to feature parity with the old scanner that it replaced. and then we have new games coming out that nobody plays, while ingress continues to die.
(come on don't tell me this is unity problem or something like that there is thousands of unity games that do not have this insane behavior)
It is actually a Unity 'problem', and there are also thousands of games that exhibit the same behavior. However, there are also third party libraries that have fixed the problem because the framework developers seem unwilling or unable to. It's because of a difference in how text input boxes occur on iOS and Android, but yes, there's definitely ways to code around it if you choose to.
I dont know how the rest of the agents feel about this idea. What I would like to see in deployment of res is we should be able to deploy one lev 8 res and two lev 7 res and four lev 6 res and from five down to one we should be able to deploy all res @NianticThia . This would be what I would like to see...
This was one of the ones I saw while doing some research on it early in the Prime beta. Everything I read was that it was simply that Unity used the OS input methods because it was easier than making ones that worked regardless of platform, then other people wrote assets to work around it. I don't do Unity dev (much more than Hello World) so I haven't gone into depth, just reading threads.
Comments
This does seem to have the transparency adjusted:
I don't know if it's the same for passcode prompts.
The text in the popups (stay alert at startup etc) are now white instead of purple.
Edit: it seems not all dialogs have received the update, the rate the app dialog is still with purple text.
As opposed to other colors we've been complaining about for years...
Main post has been updated.

Chat icon is over the cell position.

Because the developer making it, never fielded, thus never had a rank. 🤣
@NianticThia the regional faction Niantic Chat it a fantastic addition.
Damn. I wish scrolling around on the map would provide its relevant regional cell chats.
Though, you can't @ players in the chat.
Or even invite players
Niantic Chat, has gone from urgently needing to display faction next to the player's name, to being critical! @NianticThia

Great news. Now when can we opt out of "optional"
niantic chatdiscord clone feature that most didn't ask for?Regional faction chats are so exciting! We dont need this.
As with all new features, the button doesn't work. Pressing it doesn't do anything, no error messages, nothing.
I think this whole new chat system is too big of a challenge for Nia, since they can't even get COMM working.
Agreed. If they would only hold off and fix the current issues. #wishfulthinking

Are you pressing it on your own current cell? It doesn't work for other cells.
Also you must be signed up for Niantic Social.

💯@NianticThia ^^^^ this ^^^^

@Perringaiden , what would i need to google to get more technical information about this problem, and third party libraries which solve it?

That MU-problem exists in most other languages too and I need my phone for Google Maps to run in my native language.
Where are the release notes for 2.96?
